"Perry's 12 Easy Steps"
To Plan, Prepare & Recruit
March 2010

Just Over 2 Months Away!!!

Last month’s step was about making your hotel reservations. The dates, (May 24 through May 29, 2010) are coming up fast. “The Red Roof Inn” formally “Sleep Inn” located in nearby Etowah is just a short drive from the airport in Athens. Call now and mention you are with Swift for the special reduced rate. Call 423-781-7459 or see the January newsletter for the complete list of all the area accommodations.

Step 9, Call the Old Timers – Yeah, I know this sounds a lot like Step #5, but this is a very important step. How can we have an “Old Timers Fly-In” without the Old Timers? Please pick up the phone and call 3 people that used to attend the fly-ins and invite them to this special event. There’s a good chance that no matter where you live, there is someone in your area, and if you’re not sure, call Charlie or Pam at The Swift Museum Foundation and ask for their help. The number there is 423-745-9547.

It’s also time to review your progress in completing all the past steps to a successful “2010 National Swift Fly-In. Click on the bottom of this page to read all of the steps prior to Step #9. Here is the abbreviated version:

Step #1- Budget for Your Expenses – By now you should have 75% of the expenses you expect to incur saved up just for this fly-in. If you are expecting to spend $1,200.00 on travel, accommodations and meals, you should have $900.00 put away at this time.

Step #2 - Mark Your Calendar – The May page of your calendar is just 2 pages away right now. The National Swift Fly-In is May 24 through May 29, 2010

Step #3 - Schedule the Time – By now, you should have scheduled time off of work if you are working. Doctor and dentist appointments should have been made well before or well after the fly-in dates and the same for family vacations or business trips.

Step #4 - Check the Airplane - When does the annual run out? Is the plane in good flying and mechanical condition? Are there some repairs you’ve been putting off that you really need to take care of before the May 24th?

Surely you know Step #5 - Locate Someone From the Past to Invite - someone we haven’t seen for awhile. Contact them and tell them this is one fly-in they must attend.

Step #6 - Go Fly the Airplane – I know the weather this winter has been awful for most parts of the country. Start watching the weather for your area. Most TV stations give a seven day forecast. When it does look like a good weather day is coming up, plan for it and go fly the airplane.

Step #7 - Your Health – Have you checked to see when your medical certificate needs to be renewed? How about your bi-annual?

Step #8 – Make Your Hotel Reservations - Charlie printed room information in last month's newsletter. They are the following: The “Red Roof Inn” 423-781-7459. They have already offered us a rate of $55.00 plus tax. In Athens @ I-75, the Econo Lodge 423-744-8200 is still $42.95. The former Homestead West is now "Americas Best Value Inn" 423-745-9002. There are several other locations available close by the I-75 exit. All the above are on the regular Swift van transportation route. For reservations, contact the location of your choice. You must mention you are with the Swift Group to obtain the above mentioned rates. It looks like the Red Roof Inn in Etowah is the place to be this year. If you haven't already done so, make those reservations. The dates again are May 24th through May 29th.
By now you may have noticed the countdown timer Brad Madden has set up on the website. Watch it for awhile…………the clock doesn’t stop for nothing. If you are behind in the nine steps so far, you still have time to catch up. The fly-in is closer than you think!
