"Perry's 12 Easy Steps"
To Plan, Prepare & Recruit
May 2010

It is Upon Us!!!

Last month’s step was about Flight Planning. If you’re flying, you should have the necessary charts, airport reference guides and GPS updates (if applicable). You should have marked the route of flight with primary and alternate fuel stops. If you're driving, you'll need road maps and maybe GPS. If you will be coming by airline, well just get to the airport in time.

Step 11, Stay Focused - For those of you planning on attending the “Old Timers Fly-In” (May 24th through the 29th) You will need to overcome the little negative thoughts that will (if they haven't already) try to pop into your head and make it easy for you to talk yourself out of coming . These thoughts can range from "I didn't have time to purchase the current sectionals" (Go borrow them from a pilot friend). To “The weather doesn’t look like it will cooperate” (Then drive or get on the airline). The older we get, the less we like to do things that require extra time and effort and take us out of our comfort zone. It happens to me from time to time. This fly-in is important. You’ve come too far to let some little thing prevent you from attending. I personally have heeded my own advice. It has been my intention since May of last year, to do whatever it took so I could be in Athens for the fly-in.

Step 12, The Arrival – That’s all that’s left. It doesn’t matter how you arrive, just as long as you arrive. I hope the 12 Steps have been helpful to you. Maybe one or more of the previous 11 steps have touched on some of the reasons you missed these fly-ins in the past. Remember, this get-together is as much about the people as it is the airplane. So, if you’re still undecided, please take one last look at what you were planning May 24 through the 29. Maybe you could change your schedule just a wee little bit and find some time to spend with all of your Swift friends from the past and present. That’s all I have for you for now and I’ll be seeing many of you in just a few days. Till then, I wish you blue skies and tailwinds, construction free roads and highways and on time airline departures and arrivals.
